Sie war laut, sie war anders und irgendwie hatte sie einen ganz eigenen Charme: Die Computerspiele-Messe Games Convention in Leipzig startete im Jahr 2002 zaghaft mit 80.000 Besuchern. 2008 waren es satte 200.000. Rekord. Nun haben die Veranstalter vor der neu ausgerufenen Konkurrenzveranstaltung “GamesCon” in Köln kapituliert. Trotzdem soll die Messe stattfinden. Im Internet, als “Games Convention Online”.
Ein Blick zurück: Im vergangenen Jahr, also im Jahr des Besucherrekords, ist es zu Missstimmungen zwischen dem Veranstalter, der Messe Leipzig, der Kölner Messegesellschaft und dem Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware (BIU) gekommen. Letztendlich hat Köln das Tauziehen als Messestandort gewonnen. Der Wechsel wurde eingeleitet, der Bundesverband setzte auf Köln. Zu verlockend waren wohl das große Einzugsgebiet, die Verkehrsanbindung und vielleicht auch das Angebot des neuen Veranstalters.
Nun versuchen die Leipziger, mit einer neuen Kombination aus Online- und Offline-Messe ins Rennen zu gehen. Sie veranstalten vom 31. Juli bis zum 1. August erstmals die “Games Convention Online” mit dem Schwerpunkt Browser- und Handy-Games. »Die erreichte Größe und die Wachstumsdynamik im Markt der Online-Spiele schreien geradezu nach einer eigenständigen Messe«, posaunt Carsten van Husen, Gameforge-Chef und Unterstützer der neuen Veranstaltung.
»Zur “Games Convention Online” wird die reale Messe, also das Offline-Event, mit einem Online-Event kombiniert«, erklärte Messechef Wolfgang Marzin. »Das bedeutet: Via Internet sind Millionen Gamer zugeschaltet, die live an der Games Convention in Leipzig teilnehmen können. Die Games Convention Online wird mehrere Zehntausend Besucher in Leipzig haben, und mehrere Millionen Besucher in der ganzen Welt.«
“Mehrere Zehntausend”. Doch so viele? Wir werden sehen. Für mich erscheint dies eher ein verzweifelter Versuch zu sein, zumindest einen Teil der Branche in Leipzig zu halten. Eine “Online-Game-Messe” findet quasi jeden Tag im Internet statt, dazu braucht es kein neues Konzept. Trotzdem drücke ich den Leipzigern die Daumen.
